Kanzo Biomedicines engineers human liver organoids from iPS cells to treat patients with severe liver failure — starting with an extracorporeal system that keeps patients alive while their own liver recovers.
"Nearly fifteen years ago, I witnessed transplant medicine firsthand — and wanted to change a reality where liver transplantation was the only treatment available. That is why I began this research. With liver organoids grown from iPS cells, I want to give patients who could only wait a new option. Bringing UTOpiA to the clinic as soon as possible — that is my promise."
Liver failure is a leading cause of death worldwide, and treatment options remain limited.
Liver transplantation is curative, but donor availability is limited and long wait lists drive high mortality. Existing extracorporeal and cell-based alternatives have shown minimal efficacy or raise safety concerns.
We have established a reproducible process for generating endodermal tissue from induced pluripotent stem cells, producing organoids that are transcriptomically and functionally close to native liver — not just isolated hepatocytes.
Superior liver functionality — albumin production, detoxification, and biogenesis of key hepatic proteins — compared to conventional hepatocyte cell line-based systems (e.g., HepG2/C3A).
Because our organoids are derived from iPSCs, we have an effectively unlimited supply of starting material for manufacturing at scale. The cells are additionally engineered to be hypoimmune, reducing the immune response associated with allogeneic therapy.
Designed to minimize complications from therapy, avoiding the inflammatory response associated with xenografts.
Universal Tandem Optimized induced Hepatocyte-Like-Cells with Apheresis. Blood is circulated through a granulocyte-removal column paired with a column of our liver organoids, temporarily taking over the liver's job while a patient's own liver recovers.
